Tally Calculator's SGPA Calculator helps students track semester performance with real-time results. Enter credits and grades for each subject. The calculator shows your SGPA instantly as you type. No waiting, no complicated steps. Just accurate results in seconds.

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It measures your performance for one semester only. Unlike CGPA which covers all semesters, SGPA focuses on current semester achievements. This helps you understand your progress semester by semester.

Our calculator supports both 10-point (Indian universities) and 4-point (US/GPA) grading systems. Switch between systems with one click. Enter marks or select grades directly. The calculator handles all the math automatically.

What is SGPA? Understanding Semester GPA

SGPA measures academic performance for a single semester. Each subject contributes based on its credit hours. Subjects with more credits affect your SGPA more than subjects with fewer credits. This weighted approach reflects the actual time and effort you invested.

The Basic Formula

SGPA equals total weighted points divided by total credits. For each subject, multiply credits by grade points. Add all these products together. Then divide by the sum of all credits. The result is your SGPA for that semester.

SGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) / Σ(Credits)

Where Σ means "sum of" - add up all subjects

SGPA vs CGPA: Key Differences

SGPA covers one semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) covers all semesters combined. You calculate SGPA at the end of each semester. CGPA updates after every semester. Both use the same formula, just different timeframes.

SGPA (Semester)

  • Covers one semester only
  • Calculated at semester end
  • Shows current performance
  • Helps track improvement

CGPA (Cumulative)

  • Covers all semesters
  • Updated each semester
  • Shows overall performance
  • Used for final transcripts

Understanding 10-Point vs 4-Point Grading Systems

Different universities use different grading scales. Indian universities typically use 10-point systems. US universities use 4-point systems. Our calculator supports both for maximum flexibility.

10-Point System (Indian Universities)

The 10-point scale ranges from 0 to 10. O (Outstanding) earns 10 points for 90-100 marks. A+ (Excellent) earns 9 points for 80-89 marks. The scale continues down to F (Fail) with 0 points. Most Indian universities including GGSIPU, VTU, and Anna University use this system.

Top Grades (10-Point)

  • O: 10 points (90-100%)
  • A+: 9 points (80-89%)
  • A: 8 points (70-79%)
  • B+: 7 points (60-69%)

Passing Grades (10-Point)

  • B: 6 points (55-59%)
  • C: 5 points (50-54%)
  • P: 4 points (40-49%)
  • F: 0 points (0-39%)

4-Point System (US/GPA)

The 4-point scale ranges from 0.0 to 4.0. An A grade earns 4.0 points for 90-100 marks. The scale includes minus grades like A- (3.7) and B- (2.7). Most US colleges and universities use this standard. Some graduate schools require minimum 3.0 GPA for admission.

4-Point Grade Scale

A: 4.0 (90-100%)
A-: 3.7 (85-89%)
B+: 3.3 (80-84%)
B: 3.0 (75-79%)
B-: 2.7 (70-74%)
C+: 2.3 (65-69%)
C: 2.0 (60-64%)
D: 1.0 (50-59%)
F: 0.0 (0-49%)

SGPA Calculation Example

Let's walk through a complete example. This shows exactly how SGPA calculation works step by step. Follow along to understand the math behind your semester grade point average.

Sample Semester (10-Point System)

Subject 1: Data Structures

Marks: 88% → Grade: A+ (9 points) × 4 credits = 36 weighted points

Subject 2: Database Management

Marks: 76% → Grade: A (8 points) × 4 credits = 32 weighted points

Subject 3: Operating Systems

Marks: 82% → Grade: A+ (9 points) × 3 credits = 27 weighted points

Subject 4: Computer Networks

Marks: 71% → Grade: A (8 points) × 3 credits = 24 weighted points

Subject 5: Web Technologies Lab

Marks: 92% → Grade: O (10 points) × 2 credits = 20 weighted points

Calculation:

Total Weighted Points: 36 + 32 + 27 + 24 + 20 = 139 points

Total Credits: 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 16 credits

SGPA = 139 ÷ 16 = 8.69

Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers to common SGPA calculation questions

What does SGPA mean?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It measures your academic performance for one semester only. The calculation weighs each subject by its credit hours. Higher credit courses affect your SGPA more than lower credit courses.

How do I calculate SGPA manually?

Multiply each subject's credits by its grade points. Add all these products together to get total weighted points. Add all credits to get total credits. Divide total weighted points by total credits. The result is your SGPA. Our calculator does this automatically as you enter data.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA covers one semester, while CGPA (Cumulative GPA) covers all semesters. You can use our CGPA calculator for cumulative calculations. CGPA is updated each semester by including all previous semester results. Both use the same weighted average formula.

Can I calculate SGPA with letter grades?

Yes! Our calculator has Grade Selection mode. Choose your grading system (10-point or 4-point), then select letter grades from the dropdown. The calculator converts grades to points automatically. You can also enter marks and let it calculate grades for you.

What is a good SGPA score?

For 10-point systems, 8.5+ is excellent, 7.0-8.4 is good, 6.0-6.9 is satisfactory. For 4-point systems, 3.5+ is excellent, 3.0-3.4 is good, 2.5-2.9 is satisfactory. Requirements vary by university and program. Check your institution's specific standards for scholarships and honors.

How many credits is typical for one semester?

Most university semesters have 15-20 credits total. Full-time students typically take 12-18 credits per semester. Core theory courses usually carry 3-4 credits each. Lab courses often have 1-2 credits. Total credits depend on your program and university requirements.

Does SGPA affect final degree classification?

Your final degree classification depends on CGPA (cumulative), not SGPA alone. However, SGPA contributes to CGPA. Poor SGPA in one semester lowers your overall CGPA. Maintaining good SGPA every semester ensures good final CGPA and better degree classification.

Can I calculate SGPA if I have one failed subject?

Yes, include the failed subject with F grade (0 points) in your calculation. Failed subjects pull down your SGPA significantly. If you have 4 credits with F grade, that's 0 weighted points but still counts toward total credits. You must retake failed subjects.

How do I convert 10-point SGPA to 4-point GPA?

The common conversion is: 4-point GPA = (10-point SGPA × 4) ÷ 10. For example, 8.5 SGPA converts to 3.4 GPA. However, different universities use different conversion formulas. Check with the institution requiring 4-point GPA for their official conversion method.

Why is my SGPA different from my percentage?

SGPA and percentage measure performance differently. SGPA is a weighted average based on grade points and credits. Percentage is usually a simple average of marks. A subject with low marks but few credits affects percentage more than SGPA. This is why SGPA can be higher than percentage ÷ 10.

Can I calculate SGPA for part-time students?

Yes, the calculation works the same way. Enter all subjects you took this semester, regardless of total credits. Part-time students typically take fewer credits (6-11 credits per semester). The formula remains: total weighted points ÷ total credits.

Do elective courses count in SGPA?

Yes, all courses count equally in SGPA calculation - core courses, electives, and labs. Each subject contributes based on its credits and grade. Elective courses with 3-4 credits affect SGPA just as much as core courses with the same credits. Include every subject from your semester.

How accurate is this SGPA calculator?

Our calculator uses the standard SGPA formula used by universities worldwide. Results are accurate to 2 decimal places. Accuracy depends on correct input data. Double-check your credits and grades match official records. Small rounding differences (0.01) are normal.

What if my university uses a different grading scale?

Our calculator supports standard 10-point and 4-point systems used by most universities. If your university uses a custom scale, convert your grades to equivalent 10-point or 4-point grades first. Or enter credits and grade points manually using Grade Selection mode.

Can I save my SGPA calculation for later?

Currently, the calculator doesn't save data automatically. Take a screenshot of your results or write down your SGPA. You can re-enter your data anytime. The calculator remembers your configuration (grading system, number of subjects) during your browser session.
