ABSI Calculator
ABSI (A Body Shape Index) calculator measures body shape by combining waist circumference, height, weight, and BMI. It predicts mortality risk better than BMI alone.

Use our ABSI Calculator to estimate your abdominal fat-related health risk based on your waist, height, weight, age, and sex. Unlike BMI, the A Body Shape Index (ABSI) focuses on waist-to-overall body proportion, giving you a better sense of whether your body shape aligns with higher or lower risk of obesity-related diseases and early mortality.
What is ABSI (A Body Shape Index)?
ABSI (A Body Shape Index) is an anthropometric index developed in 2012 to improve on traditional BMI by including waist circumference as a key variable.
It helps identify people who may have too much abdominal fat even if their BMI looks "normal," because central fat is strongly linked to conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and higher mortality risk.
How the ABSI Calculator Works
Our ABSI Calculator uses the standard ABSI formula:
ABSI = WC / (BMI²⁄³ · H¹⁄²)
where:
- WC = waist circumference (in meters),
- BMI = body mass index,
- H = height (in meters).
From your ABSI value, we also compute an ABSI z-score, which compares your body shape to average values for people of your age and sex from population-based studies (NHANES-style reference tables).
ABSI Z-Score and Risk Categories
Your ABSI z-score tells you whether your body shape pattern is lower, average, or higher risk compared with others your age and sex. Interpretations are typically grouped as follows:
| Z-score Range | Risk Category | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| z < -0.868 | Very Low Risk | Lower-than-average mortality risk. |
| -0.868 ≤ z < -0.272 | Low Risk | Still below average risk. |
| -0.272 ≤ z < +0.229 | Average Risk | Around population average. |
| +0.229 ≤ z < +0.798 | High Risk | Elevated mortality risk. |
| z ≥ +0.798 | Very High Risk | Significantly increased risk; guidance to consult a professional is advised. |
Remember: ABSI is a risk indicator, not a diagnosis. It simply shows how your waist-adjusted body shape compares statistically.
How to Use This ABSI Calculator
Enter your data:
- Waist circumference (cm or in),
- Height (cm or ft/in),
- Weight (kg or lb),
- Age (years), and sex.
Press "Calculate ABSI"
The tool converts measurements to metric (if needed), computes your ABSI, then your ABSI z-score using age- and sex-specific reference means and standard deviations.
Review your risk category
Read the interpretation and consider lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, sleep) if you land in the High or Very High risk ranges.
Why ABSI Is Better Than BMI Alone
- BMI ignores shape: Two people can have the same BMI but vastly different waist sizes and health risks.
- ABSI adds waist: By scaling waist to height and BMI, ABSI is a better predictor of abdominal-fat-related disease and mortality than BMI by itself.
- Simple inputs: You only need waist, height, weight, age, and sex-no blood tests or scanners.
Limitations and Cautions
- ABSI is a population-level risk indicator, not a medical diagnosis.
- It does not distinguish fat from muscle; very athletic people may also show higher scores despite being metabolically healthy.
- For any persistent concerns or symptoms, consult a doctor or registered healthcare professional instead of relying solely on this calculator.
Tips to Improve Your ABSI and Health
If your ABSI z-score is in the High or Very High range, small, consistent changes can help:
- Target waist loss: Focus on reducing central (abdominal) fat through calorie-controlled eating and strength training.
- Increase physical activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, plus resistance training.
- Track regularly: Use the ABSI Calculator every few weeks under the same conditions (same time of day, clothing, etc.) to track progress.
