What Is the Ponderal Index?
Picture two boxes shaped like your body: a short, wide one and a tall, narrow one. If they weigh the same, which one feels denser? The narrow one, obviously, because all that mass is packed into less width. That's basically what BMI misses, and it's exactly what the Ponderal Index fixes by cubing height instead of squaring it.
The Ponderal Index measures body mass relative to height, using height cubed rather than squared, which better reflects the fact that the human body is a three-dimensional shape. It's sometimes called the corpulence index or Rohrer's index, after the Swiss physician who proposed it in 1921. In most cases, it produces a more height-fair result than BMI does.

Infants use weight in grams over height in centimeters cubed, times 100. Their normal range, roughly 2.2 to 3.0, is a totally different scale, so don't compare a baby's number to an adult's.
