Time Until Calculator

This time until calculator will help you identify the length of time from now to any specific date and time in the future. The result will be available in hours, minutes, and seconds.

With the time until calculator, you can also see a countdown (or time left) in hours, minutes, and seconds until that particular time.

How do you calculate the time until a date or a specific hour?

To find the time until the date, you must subtract the start date and time (usually "now") from the end date and time. The difference is how much time is left.

When discussing time on a clock only, deduct the current time from the future time. If the future clock time is earlier than now, the end point is tomorrow at that clock time.

How do you calculate manually a time interval?

The easiest way is to walk through a concrete example: how long until 2:40 PM?

Let's say now is 10:43 AM, and you want to calculate the time until 2:40 PM. Here are the simple steps to find the answer for the time between two times:

  1. Determine the start and end times. In our case, the start time is 10:43 AM, and the end time is 2:40 PM.
  2. Convert the timings to 24-hour format. When converting from 12 to 24-hour format, add 12 to the PM times. 2:40 PM becomes 14:40. AM times remain the same: 10:43.
  3. Calculate the time difference. Subtract the hours of the start time from the end time, and do the same for the minutes. 14:00 - 10:00 = 4 hours. 40 - 43 = -3 minutes.
  4. Handle any borrow or carry-over. If the minutes result is negative, add 60 minutes and subtract 1 hour. 4:00 minus 0:03 becomes 3:57.
  5. Final result. From 10:43 to 2:40 PM, there is a 3:57 difference, or 3 hours and 57 minutes.

How to calculate the time until a date?

To compute the time until a specific date, follow these steps:

  1. Identify the start and end dates and times.
  2. Count the days in between the dates.
  3. Calculate the time difference between the two times.

For example, from Sept 12 at 10:00 AM, how long will there be until Sept 27 at 5:30 PM?

  1. Identify the start and end times and dates. Times: 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM. Dates: Sept 12 and Sept 27.
  2. Count the days in between. Subtract the start date from the end date: 27 - 12 = 15 days difference.
  3. Calculate the time difference. 5:30 PM minus 10:00 AM is clearer in 24-hour format: 17:30 - 10:00 = 7:30. So between those clock times there are 7 hours and 30 minutes.
  4. The result. We have 15 days, 7 hours, and 30 minutes from Sept 12 at 10:00 AM until Sept 27 at 5:30 PM.

What is the difference between a countdown and a stopwatch?

A countdown measures time left until a fixed target. A stopwatch measures time elapsed since you pressed start. This page is a countdown: you set the end point, and the tool counts down to it.

Does daylight saving time change the countdown?

Yes. If clocks spring forward or fall back between now and your target, that shift is already reflected in the remaining duration.
