Yet as the period gets longer, say a few years, months, and days, it gets a bit more complicated (for example, the age of someone or an anniversary date). How many days are there between two dates?
When you don't have access to the internet to use a calculator, you can get your answer with a bit of math.
For example, let's find the number of days between Independence Day (July 4) and Christmas (December 25).
To calculate the days between, sum the number of days in each month. There are 30 days in September and November, and 31 days in July, August, October, and December.
Tip: to remember the number of days in a month, use this mnemonic:
"Thirty days have September, April, June, and November. February has 28 alone (or 29 in a leap year), And all the rest have 31."
If the month has already started or ends earlier than the end of the month, subtract the extra days. For July, the days after the 4th are 31 − 4 = 27. For December, count through the 25th (25 days).
That means from July 4 to December 25:
(July − 4) + August + September + October + November + December (through the 25th)
(31 − 4) + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 25
= 27 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 25
= 27 + 62 + 60 + 25 = 174 days
So the number of days between July 4 and December 25 is 174 days.
How to identify the number of days difference between two dates in the same month?
Identifying the number of days between two dates in the same month is even easier.
For example, calculate the days difference from December 7 to December 25:
Number of days in between = end date (December 25) − the start date (December 7)
Days in between = 25 − 7 = 18
Result = 18 days in between.
Tip: if you want to include the last day, add +1 to the result (same idea as the "include end day" checkbox on the calculator above).
How many days between dates calculation?
To calculate the days between dates using Excel, use the newer date minus the older date:
Days between dates = Newer date − Older date
For example, in cell A2 insert the older date; in cell B2 add the newer date; and in C2 use the formula =B2-A2. When you press Enter, you get the desired result.

How long is 180 days in months?
To convert days to months, a common shortcut is to treat 30 days as one month. Dividing 180 days by 30 gives 6, so 180 days equals six months under that rule. Months also have 28, 29, or 31 days, so for a more accurate average use about 30.417 days per month: 180 ÷ 30.417 ≈ 5.9178 months.
